Corporate social responsibility and MEAs: FIELD lawyer, Linda Siegele, co-authors article in RECIEL with Halina Ward, IIED.

FIELD lawyer, Linda Siegele, and Halina Ward, Director of Business and Sustainable Development for IIED, have co-authored 'Corporate Social Responsibility: A Step Towards Stronger Involvement of Business in MEA Implementation?', (Review of European Community & International Environmental Law, vol. 16:2 2007).

The article explores the relationship between multilateral environmental agreements (MEAs) and corporate social responsibility (CSR). It highlights three ongoing discussions with relevance to linkages between CSR and MEAs: (1) whether, and if so how, to identify minimum global business standards in the environmental sphere; (2) the rapidly evolving 'sub-theme' within the CSR agenda which addresses the business / development interface, and the contribution of business to poverty reduction, sustainable livelihoods and achieving the MDGs; and (3) the development by the International Organization for Standardization of an international guidance standard on 'organizational social responsibility', which, if adopted, will become ISO 26000.

FIELD had a stall at the inaugural UK PIEL Conference at the Institute for Advanced Legal Studies, 2nd May 2007

The event was organised by students from the UK (London and Kent) and Scotland (Edinburgh) with the support of legal academics, environmental NGOs, Matrix Chambers and the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies. The conference's objective was to stimulate a wider debate around issues of environmental justice and responsibility in the UK. The focus of the 2007 conference was on corporate responsibility. FIELD lawyers talked to a large number of students about their work and answered questions related to career prospects, particular challenges for international environmental law in the future, and access to justice at the national, EU and international level.

FIELD presented at 'The WTO and the Sustainable Development Agenda: Prospects after Hong Kong' conference, 6-7 February 2006

The event was hosted by Chatham House and was an opportunity to review the progress achieved in Hong Kong and discuss the future of the Doha round. At the conference, FIELD presented the final results of the joint project with Chatham House, on options for clarifying the relationship between the rules of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) and multilateral environmental agreements (MEAs) in light of the current round of trade negotiations under the Doha Ministerial Declaration (DMD).

FIELD attended the WTO Sixth Ministerial Conference in Hong Kong, 13-18 December 2005

On 14 December 2005, FIELD co-hosted a session with Chatham house entitled Debate: Is a Constructive Relationship Between the WTO and MEAs Possible?. The session was structured as a debate, with short presentations on the cases 'for' and 'against', followed by an 'audience challenge'. The session formed part of a project being undertaken by Chatham House and FIELD, in association with the International Centre for Trade and Sustainable Development (ICTSD), to identify options for clarifying the MEA-WTO relationship. Comments and issues raised during the session were noted and reflected in an options paper produced in early 2006 by the project partners, and dissemination to interested people, governments and organisations dealing with the WTO-MEA interface. On 15 December 2005, FIELD spoke at a session entitled Access to information and public participation in trade processes, especially at WTO, on the 'The Amicus Curiae as a mechanism of public participation in WTO dispute settlement: The GM case between Argentina, USA and Canada vs European Communities'. The session was organised by the Centro de Derechos Humanos y Ambiente (CEDHA), Argentina.
