PRESS RELEASE

FIELD Appoints New Director

Joy Hyvarinen, International Treaties Advisor to the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB), has been named as the new Director of the Foundation for International Environmental Law and Development (FIELD).

In her new position, Ms Hyvarinen will be responsible for assisting in the implementation of FIELD's mission -- the establishment of a fair, effective and accessible system of international law that protects the global environment and promotes sustainable development. She will supervise FIELD's team of international environmental lawyers across the charity's three core programme areas: biodiversity and marine resources; climate change and energy; and trade, investment and sustainable development.

Ms Hyvarinen is a Finnish-born lawyer with many years of experience in international environmental law and policymaking. She holds a Masters in Law from the University of Cambridge and has worked with FIELD for many years as an Associate. Her recent experience as Treaties Advisor to RSPB, Europe's largest voluntary wildlife conservation body, will broaden FIELD's expertise in European environmental issues, and her work with partners in developing countries complements FIELD's ongoing efforts to build the capacity of governments, local communities and non-governmental organisations in the developing world on issues of international environmental law.

"Lawyers have a key role to play in creating a fair and sustainable world," says Ms Hyvarinen. "FIELD is a great organisation that has accomplished a tremendous amount through its work with developing countries -- in particular through its work with small island States in international climate and biodiversity negotiations and in its efforts to promote environmental justice across its three programme areas. I can't wait to join the dedicated team at FIELD and its network of international partners."

Camilla Toulmin, Director of IIED, FIELD's parent organisation, warmly welcomes this development: "We are so glad to have Joy on board. She has considerable experience of international environmental treaties and a real drive to make them work for poor and vulnerable communities around the world."

Ms Hyvarinen will join FIELD in mid-November 2007.

NOTES TO EDITORS

FIELD is a registered UK charity, founded in London in 1990 to establish a fair, effective and accessible system of international law that protects the global environment and promotes sustainable development. In April 2005, FIELD became a wholly-owned subsidiary of the International Institute of Environment and Development (IIED).

The RSPB, founded in 1889, works to promote conservation and protection of birds and the wider environment through public awareness campaigns, petitions and through the operation of nature reserves throughout the United Kingdom.
