Climate Change

In June 2009, FIELD prepared a briefing note 'An implementing agreement under the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change - the US proposal and experience with the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea'.

Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD) has emerged as a hot topic in the international climate change negotiations since 2005, when a group of countries led by Papua New Guinea and Costa Rica proposed that deforestation should be included in the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

All over the world Indigenous Peoples are affected by the impacts of climate change. They often live close to the land and depend on its physical resources and richness for their livelihoods and well-being. Their environments are increasingly threatened by, for example, desertification, sea level rise, extreme weather events, and changes in wildlife health, migration patterns and abundance.

In 2003, the EU created an internal emissions trading scheme (ETS) to assist the European Community and its Member States in achieving their greenhouse gas emissions reduction commitments under the Kyoto Protocol in a cost-effective manner.

FIELD has received a two-year grant from The Christensen Fund for activities aimed at strengthening the negotiating capacity of Pacific island countries in the international negotiations on climate change and biodiversity.
