Participation of Non-Governmental Organisations in International Environmental Governance: Legal Basis and Practical Experience

FIELD and Ecologic undertook this study, commissioned by the German Federal Environment Agency (UBA). The study was launched in order to investigate the current level of public participation in negotiations on environmental issues at the international level. All of the official texts to come out of both Rio and Johannesburg stress the importance of an effective participation of civil society. This brief looks at the options for strengthening participation of NGOs in international environmental governance, examining both the legal basis for public participation as well as the practical experience of civil society currently.
