We at FIELD believe that good environmental governance - having systems in place to protect the environment - is a precondition for sustainable development. Good environmental governance is open to participation, transparent, efficient and accountable, and allows participants to make decisions in the interest of people and the planet.
At present there are around 500 multilateral agreements and an array of international organisations and institutions addressing different environmental threats. Yet this field is hampered by a lack of coordination, funding, compliance and authority. FIELD therefore supports efforts to establish a more coherent international environmental governance framework.
FIELD lawyers have an extensive knowledge of text book law, jurisprudence and legal practise in different jurisdictions, and we can help national governments improve their environmental governance by supporting them to develop laws and policies based on international norms. We refer to this area of our sustainable development work as legal empowerment.
FIELD also recognises that sustainable development can only be achieved through the involvement of all stakeholders in decisions regarding investment and development projects. We therefore work in collaboration with governments, civil society organisations and businesses. In particular, we work on issues of corporate accountability, with an overall objective of making businesses more accountable to groups and communities whose lives they affect.
