Congratulations to FIELD on the 20th anniversary!
The protection of the environment and the prudent and rational use of resources for sustainable development depends upon the commitment and dedication of excellent people. FIELD is full of such people, and always has been. FIELD was supported over the past two decades by sponsors, clients and partners, all sharing in its vision and mission.
These people contribute the ideas that help break deadlocks, open new paths, or clinch deals in policy, law, and international negotiations for the environment and sustainable development. FIELD does a great job, and fully deserves praise as it passes a milestone. The challenges and objectives remain high: Don't let up!

Congratulations to all at FIELD for achieving your 20th anniversary!
My association with FIELD goes back to 1990 when I enrolled as a part-time student in the first LLM in environmental law class at Kings College. (At that time FIELD was CIEL).
We were all tremendously inspired by the fact that two young barristers (as they then were!) James and Philippe, had not only recognised that international law concerning the environment needed changing, but had the guts to establish an organisation to do just that! I believe that their strategy of exposing keen young lawyers to the big ideas and challenges and not just the black letter law, and the example of FIELD itself, has been an outstanding success. FIELD alumni have spread all over the world and have supported one another to be creative in developing new law and legal approaches instead of just interpreting what was there. So thank you for that!
I also owe thanks to FIELD for giving me my first contract (to make recommendations as to how FIELD should relate to and benefit from its alumni and friends) when I left a commercial law firm in London and was in the process of finding a way to make my own livelihood. While establishing EnAct International in London Jake, Farhana, Philippe, James and many others at FIELD were good friends to us. In subsequent years Philippe as well as other staff members like Linda Siegele have also been very supportive of Wild Law and Earth Jurisprudence - so thank you too for that.
There is no doubt that FIELD both directly through its work, and indirectly through those it has inspired and educated, has succeeded in making an important contribution to how we govern our relationships with Earth - and may it continue to do so for many years. So we at EnAct International and Cullinan and Associates in South Africa will be toasting you on Thursday and wishing you many more years of success. Earth needs you like never before!"

Happy Birthday to all at FIELD (present and former staff)
Dear Joy, Jake, Philippe, James and Ruth,
20 years now that FIELD exists! I remember well reading the first and exciting article written by Phillipe - that was a new approach to international law and environmental protection that I instinctively recognised as what was needed to save our planet.
Afterwards I worked with FIELD in projects and in CAN, was a "friend of FIELD" and fortunate enough to become a friend of some of you. FIELD and its staff was always a source of inspiration.
Now I have changed from research and policy advice into politics itself: I am a GREEN Member of Parliament in Germany and hope that I can put into practice what I advised before.
Being a politician has one advantage over being in science: a politician does not have to know everything and s/he does not even have to pretend. Great relief!
But we do need good advice to take good decisions under conditions of uncertainty. And this, I hope, is what FIELD will continue to do in the future: provide good advice to achieve "a fair, effective and accessible system of international law the protects the global environment and promotes sustainable development".

Sorry I wont be there to join the celebrations! FIELD and I grew up together, and I learned much that I know from the experiences I shared with colleagues in FIELD's first decade.
