Oceans roundtable
On January 12, FIELD held a roundtable discussion on "A new governance body for the oceans? Focus on MPAs". Download the summary report of the roundtable, a background presentation and watch marine conservation lawyer Steve Cole talk about a new governance body and its potential roles.
The goal of the roundtable meeting was to consider the ongoing work of the Ad-Hoc Open-ended Informal Working Group to study issues relating to the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity beyond areas of national jurisdiction. The roundtable specifically focused on the potential for a new global governing body that would deal with marine protected areas in areas beyond national jurisdiction. This includes the role that a new global body may play in relation to the identification, designation and management of marine protected areas.

The roundtable followed on from FIELD’s previous discussion on "New rules for the oceans" held in July 2011. It brought together representatives of non-governmental organisations, marine scientists and academia.
