CDM Guide for Small Island Developing States

FIELD has actively assisted AOSIS in playing a key role in the development of rules for the implementation of the Kyoto Protocol's Clean Development Mechanism (CDM). FIELD is convinced that emission reductions under the Kyoto Protocol should primarily be undertaken in developed countries. We do, however, believe that well-designed and implemented CDM projects that provide emission reductions that are clearly additional and contribute to local and regional sustainable development needs could provide sustainable development benefits to Small Island Developing States (SIDS), in particular in the energy sector. FIELD strongly believes that for SIDS to benefit from the CDM such projects need to be needs-driven and clearly fit within national sustainable development needs.

The aim of FIELD's online guide is to strengthen the capacity of SIDS to host high quality CDM projects by providing guidance on the implications and practicalities of participating in the CDM. The guide provides a comprehensive explanation of the functioning of the CDM, enabling stakeholders to establish whether and how participation in the CDM can support their environmental and economic needs.
