Legal Nature of Emission Reductions

International Workshop on the Legal Nature of Emission Reductions: From 25-26 May 2004, FIELD, together with Baker & McKenzie, hosted an international workshop in London that brought together experts to discuss the legal nature of the emission reductions traded under the Kyoto Protocol, the European Union Emissions Trading Scheme and national emissions trading schemes. Approximately 60 participants from some 17 countries attended, from EU Member States, EU accession countries and developing countries, to discuss the legal nature and appropriate treatment of legal nature of traded units under property and contract law, international and regional trade law, financial services regulation, taxation law and accounting rules. The workshop was funded by the European Commission (DG Environment), the World Bank and the Netherlands Ministry of the Environment (VROM).

International Emissions Trading: From 17-18 March 2004, FIELD participated in an International Conference on Compliance and Enforcement of Trading Schemes in Environmental Protection, held at Oxford University, UK. FIELD lawyer M.J. Mace spoke on the Importance of Compliance and Enforcement in International Emissions Trading Schemes. The conference was co-organized by INECE (the International Network for Environmental Compliance and Enforcement) and the UK Environment Agency. The workshop brought together experts and high level stakeholders to address issues associated with international, national and regional emissions trading programs, including the UK and EU Emissions Trading schemes.
