Liability and Redress for Damage to Biodiversity

FIELD lawyers are undertaking research in the field of liability and redress for damage to biological diversity with a view to making inputs to ongoing processes on this issue at the European and international level.

Among the issues being addressed are the definition and valuation of damage to biological diversity. In 2000, FIELD provided legal support to the development of a position paper, by WWF and Birdlife International, on the European Commission White Paper on Environmental Liability. We are currently involved in discussions on liability and redress under Article 14(2) of the Convention on Biological Diversity and under Article 27 of the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety.
