Foundation for International Environmental Law and Development

Globalisation, Food Security and the International Governance of Modern Biotechnology

FIELD is coordinating a research project on Globalisation and the International Governance of Modern Biotechnology. The project is exploring the extent to which the international governance of biotechnology is keeping pace with scientific developments, and related impacts on the ability of developing countries to develop and implement policy in the field of biotechnology and biosafety to address concerns over food security. Key issues in the project are the links between international and national level policy-making in the field of environmental protection, trade and food security; and the influence of the biotechnology industry on national and international policy-making in this field. Our project partners in this work are: the Institute of Development Studies (IDS), University of Sussex; the African Centre for Technology Studies (ACTS), Nairobi; Research and Information Systems for the Non-Aligned and Other Developing Countries (RIS), New Delhi; and the National Law School University of India (NLS), Bangalore.

Two workshops were held in 2002, one in Delhi and one in Nairobi. These were opportunities for policy makers from those regions to discuss the various issues surrounding modern biotechnology and to share in the results from the project research.

The final papers from the project will be available here soon.
