Legislative Harmonisation: Meeting the Requirements of the CBD and Other Multilateral Environmental Agreements (MEAs)

In 2001, FIELD co-ordinated this project, one of the 'thematic studies' under UNEP/UNDP/GEF's Biodiversity Planning Support Programme (BPSP). The project aimed at strengthening national capacity to effectively implement the following biodiversity-related conventions: the CBD, CITES, the Convention on Migratory Species, the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands of International Importance and UNESCO's World Heritage Convention. The project looked at key areas of synergy in the implementation of these conventions with analysis of the legal and institutional frameworks for biodiversity policy in Cuba, Hungary, India, Kenya and Peru.

Project outputs consider the need to integrate and harmonise the national-level activities aimed at complying with the different international agreements relating to biological diversity. An international workshop was hosted by FIELD in London, in May 2001, where a draft discussion paper and an information package were discussed. The project papers have since been reviewed and were distributed in CD-ROM format at the Seventh Meeting of the CBD's Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice (SBSTTA) in Montreal, Canada, in November 2001.
